The Lateral Power Revolution
Lateral power — the force generated in sideways and diagonal directions rather than purely forward — is the most underappreciated and undertrained physical quality in hockey skating. The lateral power revolution in hockey development is correcting that imbalance and producing more complete, more explosive skaters.
What You Need to Know
Hockey skating is fundamentally lateral, not linear. The force that propels a player forward is generated at a roughly 45-degree angle to the direction of travel — a lateral push against the ice that converts to forward momentum through the skating mechanics. Yet training programs at most levels allocate far more time to forward sprint work than to the lateral power development that actually drives on-ice acceleration.
Off-ice lateral power development uses tools that specifically load the movement patterns of hockey skating. Lateral bounds — single-leg jumps pushing laterally and landing on the opposite foot — directly train the hip abductor and glute medius strength that generates power at the skating push-off phase. Resistance-band skating simulations, lateral sled pushes, and side plank progressions all develop the musculature that produces lateral skating power.
On-ice lateral power development emphasizes crossover mechanics and edge-loading sequences that maximize lateral push angle. The inside edge crossover step is the most powerful on-ice lateral movement — players who can achieve full leg extension through the crossover push generate significantly more acceleration than players who crossover with short, incomplete pushes.
Equipment contributes to lateral power expression. Skate boot stiffness directly affects lateral power efficiency: a stiff boot transmits the force generated by the leg to the ice without absorbing it through boot flex.
Lateral Power Training Essentials:
- Add lateral bounds to your off-ice conditioning 2-3 times per week
- Focus on crossover step extension length during on-ice practice
- Ensure your boot stiffness matches your strength level — underpowered players waste energy fighting stiff boots
- Track your lateral start speed separate from your forward start speed
The game is played sideways. Train for the direction the game actually moves in.
