The First Goal Checklist: Setting Up Young Hockey Players for a Great First Season

Getting a child ready for their first hockey season involves navigating equipment decisions that feel overwhelming without context. This checklist cuts through the noise and focuses on what actually matters for young players just starting out.

The Complete Equipment List

  • Helmet with full cage — CSA certified; fitted to current head size, not "room to grow"
  • Neck guard — BNQ certified; required in sanctioned play; buy new, always
  • Shoulder pads — covering shoulder cap, upper arm, and chest; should not shift when arms are raised
  • Elbow pads — elbow point covered with arm fully extended
  • Gloves — full wrist coverage; snug enough for grip control
  • Shin guards — kneecap to the top of the skate boot, no coverage gap
  • Jock or jill — non-negotiable regardless of age
  • Hockey pants — hip, tailbone, and thigh coverage
  • Skates — one thumb width at the toe; heel firmly seated
  • Stick — chin height in socks; age-appropriate flex

The Most Common First-Season Mistake

Buying everything two sizes up to grow into. Gear that doesn't fit doesn't protect. Shin guards too long create coverage gaps at the knee. Helmets too large shift on impact. Skates too big compromise both mechanics and ankle support. Buy for the child in front of you, not the one you're planning for. Gear exchanges handle the growth problem economically — fit handles the safety problem correctly.
