The 2026 Rookie Checklist: Everything You Need for Your First Hockey Season
Every hockey player starts somewhere. Whether you're a child trying the sport for the first time or an adult signing up for a beginner program, getting the right gear from the start makes the experience dramatically better. Here's the complete rookie checklist for 2026 — what you need, what matters most, and where to be smart about spending.
The Complete Equipment List
- Helmet with full cage — CSA certified; full cage is required at most levels and recommended for all beginners
- Neck guard — BNQ 9415-970 certified; mandatory in sanctioned play
- Shoulder pads — covering shoulder cap, upper arm, and chest
- Elbow pads — covering the elbow point with the arm extended
- Gloves — full wrist coverage; snug enough for control
- Shin guards — kneecap to top of skate boot, no gaps
- Jock or jill — no exceptions
- Hockey pants — hip, tailbone, and thigh coverage
- Skates — the most important purchase; fit correctly in your current size
- Stick — chin height in socks; start with a lower flex rating
The Smart Spending Approach
Buy new: helmet and neck guard, always. These are safety items with certification lifespans and impact histories you can't verify used. Buy quality used: everything else on the list. For a first season especially, the used market delivers excellent value on gear you'll use to learn fundamentals.
The Most Important First Step
Visit a dedicated hockey pro shop in person. Get your skates fitted by someone who knows what proper fit looks like. Get them baked. Start your hockey career on skates that fit — the difference in your early learning experience is enormous, and you'll never regret the investment in that first fitting.
