Soakers vs. Hard Guards: Using the Right Blade Cover for the Right Situation

Skate blade covers are one of those gear items players often choose without realizing that soakers and hard guards serve completely different purposes — and that using one where you need the other causes real damage over time to your blade investment.

Hard Guards: For Walking, Not Storing

Hard plastic blade guards protect the blade and everything around it when walking on hard surfaces off the ice — locker room floors, rubber mats, arena hallways. They prevent edge damage on concrete and protect feet and furniture from contact with exposed steel. They are walking guards, not storage guards.

The critical mistake: leaving hard guards on during storage. Hard guards seal moisture against the blade rather than allowing it to evaporate. A blade stored overnight in hard guards in a closed bag is in the worst possible moisture environment for rust prevention.

Soakers: For Storage, Not Walking

Soakers are absorbent blade covers designed to wick moisture away from the blade during storage and transport. They absorb the condensation that forms as blades return to room temperature from cold ice. They prevent rust by eliminating moisture contact with the steel surface. They provide no structural protection on hard floors.

The Correct Sequence

  1. Off the ice → hard guards on → walk to the dressing room
  2. In the dressing room → hard guards off → dry blades with a skate rag
  3. Into the bag → soakers on → store until next skate

Both items are inexpensive. Used correctly, they protect your blade investment across an entire season.
