Refuel & Rehydrate 2026
Hockey demands a unique nutritional response. The combination of anaerobic and aerobic energy systems, the cognitive demands of the game, and the compressed schedule of tournaments and back-to-back games create refueling and rehydration requirements that are specific to the sport.
What You Need to Know
The window immediately following a hockey game or demanding practice — the 30-60 minutes after the final whistle — is when nutritional recovery is most efficient. Muscle glycogen synthesis and protein synthesis are both elevated, and the body's ability to absorb and utilize carbohydrates and amino acids is at its peak. Players who eat and drink strategically in this window recover meaningfully faster than those who delay.
The ideal post-game nutrition combines fast-absorbing carbohydrates and quality protein in a roughly 3:1 ratio. Chocolate milk, long mocked as an unsophisticated choice, has solid research support as a recovery drink because it naturally approximates this ratio and provides electrolytes. More engineered alternatives include recovery shakes with whey protein and maltodextrin, but the fundamentals are the same.
Hydration during hockey is more complex than most players appreciate. Skaters lose between 1 and 2 liters of sweat per hour during high-intensity sessions, but the confined dressing room environment and layers of equipment can mask thirst until dehydration is already affecting performance. Establishing a habit of drinking 500ml before stepping on the ice creates a buffer that delays the dehydration performance drop.
For tournament play — where multiple games occur over 48-72 hours — sodium replacement becomes as important as fluid replacement. Sodium drives thirst and retains fluid in the vascular system more effectively than water alone.
Refuel and Rehydrate Protocol:
- Consume combined carbohydrates and protein within 30 minutes of finishing
- Pre-hydrate with 500ml before games; don't rely on in-game thirst signals
- Use sodium-containing electrolyte sources during tournament weekends
- Plan your tournament nutrition before you arrive — reliable food options aren't always convenient at rinks
Feed the recovery window. Your next game's performance is determined by how you finish today's.
