Mid-Season Gear Audit: The Systematic Check Every Player Should Run

By mid-season, gear that started the year in good condition has absorbed dozens of games and practices. A systematic audit catches degradation before it becomes failure — and before failure happens at the worst possible moment during the playoff push.

The Blade Assessment

Check remaining blade height — within 3mm of the holder, plan for new steel before playoffs. Assess edge consistency by feel: run a fingernail lightly perpendicular to each edge; it should catch uniformly along the full blade length. If you've noticed any change in how your edges feel on ice, address it now rather than hoping it improves.

Helmet Check

Press firmly on interior foam sections — they should spring back immediately and fully. Any section that stays compressed has lost its impact-absorbing function. Inspect the shell for hairline cracks, especially around cage attachment points. Check all hardware for looseness or corrosion.

Protective Gear Review

  • Shoulder pads: coverage still in correct position? Velcro and elastic still functional?
  • Shin guards: plastic shells intact? No gaps between kneecap and boot top?
  • Gloves: palm wear in shooting thumb and index finger area directly affects stick feel in pressure moments
  • Elbow pads: elbow point still covered with arm extended?

The Timing Advantage

Mid-season issues addressed in January or February happen on your schedule. The same issues discovered mid-playoff run happen at the worst possible time. Twenty minutes of systematic checking now prevents every emergency replacement scenario later in the season.
