February Gear Audit 2026

Midseason is the perfect time to take stock of your equipment. By February, your gear has logged significant hours — and a systematic audit now can prevent equipment failures during the stretch run of the season.

What You Need to Know

Start with your skates. Check the boot for structural cracks, particularly along the toe cap and heel counter. Press firmly on the quarter panel — if it feels soft or delaminated, the stiffness has degraded and your energy transfer is suffering. Inspect the holders for cracks at the mounting points; this is a stress fracture zone that is often overlooked. Replace any holder screws that appear stripped or corroded.

Move to your sticks. February is typically when stick blades show fatigue from consistent use. Look for micro-cracks at the blade neck and test the shaft flex against its original feel. Most players don't realize how much a well-used stick has "died" until they pick up a fresh one. If your shot feels weak, it might be the stick rather than your technique.

Helmet fit deserves attention, especially if you or your child has grown. Check that the cage is fully latched and that the chin cup sits correctly. Inspect your shoulder pads, elbow pads, and shin guards for cracked shells or torn straps — anything that might shift under impact.

Don't forget your skate bag itself: mildew buildup in bags creates an unpleasant environment and can cause skin irritation. A mid-season airing out and light spray with a sport odor neutralizer goes a long way.

February Audit Checklist:

  • Skate boot integrity and holder mounting
  • Stick blade fatigue and shaft flex
  • Helmet fit and cage latch
  • Pad shells and strap condition
  • Bag and liner hygiene

A thorough gear audit takes 30 minutes and can save your season.
