Donating Gear in the GTA: How to Get Your Used Hockey Equipment to Players Who Need It
The Greater Toronto Area has one of the highest concentrations of hockey players in the world — and also some of the most active gear donation and exchange infrastructure in the country. If you have outgrown or unused equipment in good condition, getting it into the hands of a player who needs it is straightforward. Here's how.
Local Association Exchanges
Your local Minor Hockey Association is the first stop. MHAs across the GTA — from Mississauga to Toronto to the 905 — run seasonal gear exchanges and informal donation programs. Contact your association's equipment manager or registrar directly, ideally in August before fall season registration opens. Gear donated through the local association goes directly to families in your community.
GTA-Specific Programs
- Hockey Equipment Assistance Program (HEAP) — collection points across the GTA; year-round donation accepted
- Community rink programs — many GTA community arenas maintain gear lending programs for try-hockey initiatives; call your local rink directly to inquire
- School board programs — some GTA school boards with hockey programs accept gear donations for physical education use
- Facebook community groups — local hockey parent groups often coordinate informal gear exchanges; "free to a good home" posts move quickly
Donation Standards
Helmets and neck guards: only donate if they meet current CSA certification and have no history of significant impact. Check the manufacture date — most helmets have certified lifespans of six to ten years. Everything else: clean it, check it, and if it's something you'd put on your own child, it's appropriate to pass along. The gear exchange ecosystem in the GTA is active and effective — it works because people donate responsibly.
