Mid-Season Gear Audit 2.0: The Advanced Equipment Check for the Serious Player

The basic mid-season gear check — look for obvious damage, make sure everything still fits — is a good starting point. Players who want gear performing at its best through the playoff push need to go deeper. Here's the advanced audit heading into the back half of the season.

Advanced Blade Assessment

Beyond visual inspection, a thorough blade assessment includes: measuring remaining height with a gauge rather than eyeballing; checking whether the profile has drifted toward flat from repeated sharpening (using a profile gauge or having a technician assess); and evaluating edge symmetry by feeling both edges with a fingernail. Uneven edges — even when both are technically sharp — produce inconsistent left-right skating performance that's often misattributed to technique rather than equipment.

Boot and Holder Deep Check

Have a qualified technician examine your boot structure if you've noticed any change in skating feel during the season. Boot breakdown often happens gradually enough that the player adapts without noticing until degradation is significant. Check holder fasteners for any play or looseness — rivets that have begun to work loose under cyclic load need attention before they fail entirely under game conditions.

Protective Gear Functional Testing

Don't just look at gear — put it on and move in it. Does everything stay in position through realistic hockey movements? Gear that holds position on the equipment rack but rides or shifts during play has fit issues that static inspection misses. The mid-season audit should include wearing each piece of protective gear through the range of motion it needs to maintain in actual game situations. Address what's flagged now, before it matters in April.
