Hockey Gear for Lacrosse: What Crosses Over and What You Still Need to Buy

Multi-sport athletes are pragmatic about their gear: if equipment from one sport works in another, why buy it twice? Hockey and lacrosse share enough physical overlap that crossover is genuinely possible for many items. But there's one critical exception that players and parents need to understand before assuming their hockey kit covers them on the lacrosse field.

What Works Across Both Sports

  • Hockey gloves — widely used in box lacrosse; the protection level and mobility are well-suited to the position. Field lacrosse players also use them, particularly on defense.
  • Shoulder pads — appropriate for box lacrosse and recreational field play; the impact protection translates well
  • Elbow pads — functional crossover in both box and field environments
  • Hockey pants — hip and thigh protection that works for lacrosse contact
  • Shin guards — acceptable for box lacrosse, though fit may differ from lacrosse-specific shin guards

The Critical Exception: Helmets Are Not Interchangeable

This cannot be overstated: hockey helmets are certified for hockey impacts; lacrosse helmets are certified for lacrosse impacts. These are different force profiles, different cage geometries, and different certification standards. Wearing a hockey helmet in organized lacrosse is almost certainly a rules violation — and more importantly, provides the wrong protection for the wrong situation. Don't guess on this one.

The Practical Bottom Line

For casual, informal cross-sport play, the gear overlap saves meaningful money. For any sanctioned program, verify the specific equipment requirements before the first practice. Gloves, pads, and pants: likely fine. Helmets: always sport-specific, always certified, always confirmed with the league.
