Hockey Gear for Lacrosse: What Crosses Over and What Doesn't

Cross-sport gear use is common sense for multi-sport athletes — why buy everything twice if equipment from one sport works in another? Hockey and lacrosse share enough physical overlap that the crossover question comes up regularly. Here's a clear breakdown of what transfers and what doesn't.

What Crosses Over Well

  • Hockey gloves — widely used in box lacrosse; provide excellent hand protection without limiting stick handling. Some field lacrosse players use them too, particularly in defensive positions.
  • Hockey shoulder pads — accepted for box lacrosse; good contact protection that works across both sports
  • Hockey pants — functional hip and thigh protection in box lacrosse environments
  • Elbow pads — similar enough in function to work across both sports for recreational play

The Critical Exception: Helmets

Helmets are sport-specific certifications, and this is not a detail you can fudge. Hockey helmets are certified for hockey impacts; lacrosse helmets are certified for lacrosse impacts. These are different force profiles, different cage designs, and different certification standards. Using a hockey helmet in a sanctioned lacrosse program (or vice versa) almost certainly violates the league's equipment rules and, more importantly, provides the wrong protection for the right situation.

For Recreational Cross-Sport Play

For informal, non-sanctioned play, the crossover is generally fine and saves meaningful money. For any organized program, check the specific equipment requirements before showing up with hockey gear for lacrosse. Most leagues will have specific helmet and some other equipment requirements that must be met. The savings on gloves and pads are real; don't let them get offset by a helmet replacement you didn't expect to need.
