What You Need to Know

440C is the industry standard for high-performance skate blades. It's a martensitic stainless steel with a high carbon content that allows for excellent hardness when heat-treated properly. Blades made from 440C can be sharpened to a very fine edge, hold that edge under load, and resist corrosion — all critical properties for hockey use. The trade-off is brittleness: 440C is more prone to micro-chipping under extreme lateral stress.

ALUPLI is a newer proprietary steel alloy developed to address the brittleness issue. It maintains comparable hardness levels to 440C but with improved toughness — meaning it resists chipping when blades contact ice ruts, puck marks, or board edges. The result is a blade that holds its profile longer between sharpenings without sacrificing edge quality.

In practical testing, ALUPLI blades tend to last longer between full sharpenings and resist the "rolled edge" effect that plagues 440C in cold rink conditions. However, the difference is most noticeable at the elite level where players skate on freshly cut ice with aggressive sharpening profiles.

For recreational players, the performance gap between the two materials is smaller than marketing suggests. Both steels will outperform the baseline blades that come stock on most skates.
