3D-Printed Hockey Gear
Three-dimensional printing has moved from prototyping tool to production technology in hockey equipment manufacturing, with applications that span custom fit solutions, protective component replacement, and entirely new structural approaches to gear design.
What You Need to Know
The most mature application of 3D printing in hockey equipment is custom insoles. Several manufacturers and specialty fitters now use foot scan data to produce 3D-printed insoles that match the exact geometry of an individual player's foot, providing targeted support in areas that standard insoles address only approximately. Players with high arches, pronation issues, or previous foot injuries report significant comfort and performance gains from custom-printed insoles over aftermarket alternatives.
Protective padding is the most promising frontier. Traditional foam and plastic shell protection is limited by the constraints of mass production — components must be designed for a statistical average user rather than the individual. 3D-printed lattice structures offer energy absorption characteristics that can be tuned for specific impact zones, player weights, and impact velocities. These lattice pads absorb impact through controlled deformation and return to shape — a mechanical advantage over foam, which compresses permanently over time.
Custom helmet fitting using 3D-printed internal padding is available at several elite-level facilities. Rather than selecting from a range of stock padding configurations, a player's head geometry is scanned and padding is printed to exactly fill the space between the helmet shell and the skull — the same approach used in racing helmets.
3D Printing Applications Available Now:
- Custom 3D-printed insoles from certified fitters
- 3D-printed replacement components for out-of-production equipment
- Custom helmet padding at select facilities
- Prototype skate components at some manufacturer development centers
3D printing is not the future of hockey gear — it is already the present for those who seek it out.
